11 November 2007 - Plans, Ideas, and 2008 - BuytheMap to continue.

I thought it was time to put a little entry in the old Buythemap blog, it's been a little while. Soon BuytheMap will have existed for a whole 2 years, and blimey what an interesting 2 years that has been. Recently I thought the site would be lost for ever as I had my laptop stolen and could not access the site, nor did I have any of the files in order to update it. But a bit of head scratching and a couple of nervy moments making some changes and it seems the site can by played with - a little!

Anyway at the moment as you wil see no countries have been sold for ages and the format of the site has remained a bit stagnant. However I have been up to projects behind the scenes and I have been further investigating Adsense. I've been keeping an eye of the subject of 'domaineering' and have been making some small investments in websites. Essentially domaineers buy and sell web domain names, plus they set up sites with advertising. I have bought a few and am trying my luck to see if I can make some money. This is a huge market, good names can sell for thousands.

Currently the sites that I have bought are linked in to my articles page, and show at the bottom of my homepage. But the long term plan is that BuytheMap will act as a host to these sites, and will grow a web of further sites that will hopefully earn revenue from adsense. I will keep the format of the site but will hopefully do some fun things in the background. Already I have written some articles on movies, going out in Birmingham, laws etc.

So I will use this blog as an update and tracker of how this project goes and all the planning ideas etc that go in to this way of making money. Remember all those adverts that say 'Make money while you sleep' well this is it.

Anyway I guess this isn't week 1 - but revenue for this week stands at $1.86 hopefully this will go up!!

28 January - Two Blog entries this month - what can this mean?

Hi all, firstly I will give you some updates - sorry to those that have emailed and recieved no response, the email address was spammed to death, anywy I am hopping to get on top of that and you may notice the new Email Me buttons on the site. I am hopng this will solve the issues.

Secondly Google Adsense - how is that going? Well So far I have amounted a massive £2.50 from all the google advertising on the site (well better than nothing) but I am hoping to write some more articles and get more traffic to the site.

Thirdly (there always has to be a third aspect) back by popular demand will be auctions for countries. In the next few weeks I should have some up and will have another go at getting the marketing back on track. If you build it they will come......

9 January 2007 - YO YO YO!

Hello Chaps - those of you who are regular to the site will notice some changes - yes I have now mastered Google Adsense. For those new to the site, Since I started it last year I have effectively been making it up as I go along, and learning new things. And hence my latest thing learnt is Adsense. This means on many of my pages you will see adverts (hopefully relevant to the content). Further to this is the New - BuytheMap Articles - again a ploy to make some more money. The theory is that if I can write some interesting articles people will find them on a search engine, read the article and click the ads - hence more moolah.

Anyway want to know how much I have made......! Well since Christmas google have paid me a massive 87pence - woohoo!

So I will keep you updated on that one (I can sense your excitement) anyone want to write some articles feel free to email me. On that note my email has been getting really spammed so I need to sort that out.

I do have some plans to update the site again and keep it fresh - plus the whole method of buying countries resolved.

Any how probably my most boring blog entry ever - Theyre usually a very high standard! Merru Christmas - Happy New Year! The next one will be more fun I promise! Now back to Spendaholics - how can these people spend so much money! £50k in debt!!

11 December - I know I know 3months - let me explain

Well turns out Paul McKenna was more devious than at first thought and I have been drugged up in a cell for the last few months.......

Ok not really I'll be honest, I have been living in the real world! Crazy eh! After my knee op I spent loads of time renovating my new house, playing lots of sports, and knuckiling down at work. But I just love buythemap so much I can't stay away. And the crazy thing is the site continues to get hits from people, I think ending up here by mistake - hello random person! I really need to look at the stats but I think it's around a million hits now. Did you hear about the guy that set up a website and bet his girlfriend if he got a million hits they'd have a threesome - doh! Why didn't I think of that!! Anyway some comments I think - I love preaching, lets talk about the inspiration to this website. Ladies and Gentlement Mr ALex Tue, creator of the Milliondollarhomepage and now Pixelotto. Can you ruddy believe it, he spent 6months moaning about copycats (im not one ;) and how he had a great new idea. Well bloody great idea - I know do the same thing but charge 2dollars this time! Ok I think we all know he probably wont sell them all but he's made another quick £100,000 I could buy a PS3 with that and a Wii!

Anyway what else - I think just to say I'm going to have a play around with the site up to Christmas, its my little baby, and the only site I've ever done that people have looked at so long may it continue. I just need to make it more like Youtube! All I need is one rich bloke (very eccentric) to decide he wants the world, and this time next year we'll be millionaires!

20 August - Its funny how things turn out...

So its sunday afternoon, having a chilled out weekend, and thought I would post a quick blog entry....its theraputic. Reflecting on the year (its only August I know) its been a great one. BuytheMap has been fantastic fun, and a great learning experience, los of hits, lots of emails, and a little bit of money ;) Ive decided Im not going to sell countries on Ebay for a little while - takes a long time to setup and Ebay is expensive. There are still some countries left so if you want one email me with the heading 'I WANT A COUNTRY' and I will respond. So whats the point of this blog entry?? There should always be a point, perhaps a world comment, a big heartfelt thanks for something or other, or a venting moan.......mm lets think. I know a word of advice.

29 July - Has it been that long!

Wow it seems like yesterday when I was posting on my blog to say I would be offline for a little bit, but over a month! Thats a long time in the tinternet world! Anyway the house move is over and I am back online - thanks for being patient guys. Had some great emails in my inbox to read including an offer to Sell Buy the map. Some guy loved the site so much he wanted me to sell it to him, and was offering loads of money. But alas I wanted to keep my finger in the pie, and protect the interests of all you country owners out there! (Im so great!) Also thanks for all the competition entries, I will send out an email at some point this week and get the site back up and running properly soon. Also country sales will be back up and running properly again soon. As you can see there is a space up there top left for a good idea.........anyone got one?? And my usual comment on the state of the world.....Well Lebaonon and Israel seem to have fallen out, lve decided to take these two countries off the map for the timebeing so they cn have a long hard think about what they are doing......Afghanistan / Iraq you are warned ;)

Cheers guys and for anyone that is interested, the operation on my knee went horribly wrong, it turns out the doctor was really Paul McKenna whom hipnotised me to believe I had had it repaired, but in fact he had put a small camera in my knee and was watching my every move from his evil villains lair. Luckily James Bond was on the case, whilst Paul McKenna was hypnotising him, he saw the tv monitors in the background, managed to use his watch to deflect Pauls powers on himself. Saved a random beautiful girl, blew up the lair, and took me to lunch to let me know the evil plan. Maybe I'll get round to sorting it out.....

09 June 2006 - I am alive!

Hello all, wow things have been hectic, but no apologies for not updating my blog as I have been in hospital. Think I mentioned it before but I have just had an ACL reconstruction, my penance for my love of skiing. They took my patella tendon, and recreated my cruciate ligament, was all very painful - and not a hot nurse in sight. Anyway Im MRSA free and back giving the site the attention it needs. Lots of you have been entering the competition, I think I my have made it too easy, as your smug remarks suggest, so add some humour to stand out from the crowd! Also the country that everyone has wanted is finally up for sale so have a look at the UK here, and have a little bid ;) My other comments on the world in general at the moment, well sun is out and world cup fever is taking hold - I'll have a think about how I can tie BuytheMap in with the world cup a little as everything else has - oh check out Scicily I thought that was appropriate,

Also A big celebration as the site has now recieved more than a quarter of a million hits since christmas - I guess the next target is a million - wow that would be pretty amazing - stick with me guys! By this time next year we'll all be millionairs!

21 May 2006 - Are you ready.....thall I shall begin.

Ok so Russia is still avaliable people don't miss out on this amazing space on the map. Ok big sell over, lets talk about it then.......Big Brother, what a bunch of bonkers missfits, although I must say Grace is quite hot. But jeeze that Shabaz would drive me mad! Laura has decided she won't watch it, which is good for her, but I really just find it so comical - and Davina is preggers again, she's a baby machine. Also this week I have mainly been playing the Godfather game on my ps2, i really want an Xbox360, oh and a flat tv, oh and a ipod and this could go on for ever... Not really been a very eventful week mainly due to the rubbish weather, my golf has of course suffered - but probably saved myself a few quid by not loosing any bets. Anyway Im trying out new internet thingys and one of them is called affiliating, from the 'Bid' button ebay has given me a massive £10 for directing people to their site, and so i thought I would try another one.....ladies and gentlement please welcome Donald...... the sites newest sponsor, and my new best friend. Hi Donald, any business tips......comeone anything for us...........mmmmm oh well I'll let you know how the relationship goes (hes always very serious looking nd that hair)! 15 May 2006 - a Regular normal update - lots of countries sold, and some biggies too!

Ok so USA - Sold! China Sold! Canada Sold! there going fast people your chance to get on the map is fading! I just had a quick look at the stats to a we are fast approaching a quater of a million hits! I am gobsmacked but keen to keep the momentum up! This week I have put the biggest of them all up the sleeping bear, the biggest consumer of Caviar and Vodka up for sale - yup gold old RUSKI! So get in and make a bid, there is loads of potential with this country, and you will be truly seen buy the world - click bid! Oh I also had some irate person emailing me this week telling me to check my spelling as it was driving them mad - so this is for you.........sory!

07 May 2006 - BuytheMap Keyrings ?!?

Ok just found a new site linking in to BuytheMap, out that of all the hundreds and thousands of Pixel websites out there BuytheMap is the 24th most popular - check this out here! Imagine if the site got to number 2! Oh also this week I sorted out some keyrings, saw them on Ebay and though it would be fun, pic below. But I Spelt the name of the site wrong anf had to re-order them - doh! I think I need n assistant - LAURA! Anyway this week the massive Canada is up for sale, looks like one of the best to have.....and i have a feeling the UK could be on the market quite soon too. In the 'real world' I've become a bit obsessed with golf, and had a good round yesterday, no beating the ground with my club in sight (and didn't come last). And I got the date for my knee operation 1June - to have a nice new cruiciate ligament so I will be able to ski at christmas hopefully. I'm told I get morphine -scary! 01 May 2006 - Wow another month down, where does it go ?!

Hello all. Well as you can see the site has been completely overhauled, so updates should now be back to normal and the blog will be action packed as ever! Ok so whats been going on, well bank holiday weekend has just finishd, doh! Had a good couple of nights out on Friday and Saturday. Saturday was quite messy though, the list of pubs and clubs was.......The Rectory, Apres, La Tasca, Sobar, 52degrees, Moseley Dance Centre, Risa - so Sunday was mostly spent feeling sorry for myself. Today saw me play golf for the first time in 4years in sporadic rains, but went ok actually! Oh and the site, well obviously selling China and the USA has helped the bank balance, and there are some awesome countries up for sale this week including the amazing CANADA so get it while its hot! Stats as always look great and fast approaching the 200,000hits mark!! Anyway watching WifeSwap now so going to watch the fights! One thing I have noticed by now Alex Tue ws raking it in and on Richard & Judy this is proving harder than I thought.

29 April 2006 - Another Sale

Ok all I shall keep it quick - as you can see the site has just undergone some massive changes, and it will stay like this now cause I love it! USA just sold $200, so not as much as CHINA for $255. just waiting for the link and logos. Couple more minor site tweaks to do so it will all be finished very soon, and thinking of the next competition...! The joy the fun, you till there? Oh I also thought about writing a book about my adventures it will be called ....fook....in all good bookshops monday.

9 April 2006 - How Much!?!

Ok so picture the scene -normal Sunday night, movie in the afternoon, Frankie and Bennies for Dinner, and back home and a quick check of the Auctions......HOW MUCH! So China is at $255 dollars as I speak, I have started listing in dollars as well to hit more of an American audience (£150 for the English crowds), and ...wow! Here's the link, EBAY there are still 6hrs remaining so will be interesting to see if it changes - hell maybe I won't need to go in to work tomorrow! ;) I've just created something worth more than gold!

4 April 2006 - So whats been going on this week?

Wow hectic week, this week saw the end of our fabulous competition, the answer to the riddle was of course a coffin!. So IRAQ has a new owner...but I saw so many good websites enter that I couldn't resist giving another two sites some space...so look for the Shark! and Fiji as well! Alls going well anyway, stats are good, and something very interesting is planned for Australia, so keep watching this space. 27 March 2006 - BuytheMap smashes through the 100,000 hits mark!

I just looked at the stats and BuytheMap has now had 114,000 hits which is absolutely fantastic, so thanks everyone for your support, since Christmas we have now been running for 10weeks, and average hits per day are 2,500. The Alexa rankings have been great to and I have seen the site close to the top 50,000 on a few occassions now. I will post the stats up soon. This week saw development grind to a bit of a halt as i had so much going on in my personal life, buying a house, and also my Birthday. But I will now pick things back up and get the site pumping again - oh and I have made a little breakthrough on the design side which I will revealing soon...cheers ;) A quick pirate joke - Pirate walks in to a bar with a ships wheel down his trowsers. Bar men says - exscuse me mate have you seen that down your pants. Pirate replies - ahh its driving me nuts!

19th March 2006 - Crashing down the rankings!..

Just spotted the site was ranked in the top 50,000 of Alexa today, havent had chance to investigate but the average is around the 250,000mark and falling. Some of you may have also spotted other sites selling countries, so don't forget who was here first, - feel quite proud that I have started a new internet fad! Am i the Alex Tue of Countries - well perhaps not - My arms arent as big as his! Just trying to think of anything else but nope think thats it for tonight, oh yes one more thing.....watch out for the BIRDS.... Click on them for more info!

27th February 2006 - 'IRAQ has no weapons of mass destruction'

Hi all - Sunday night 12am and work tomorrow - damn spent far to much time on this site again...! Anyway I will firstly throw some stats at you, we hit another milestone and have now recieved 50,000hits since the site started - cue smug grin. Had our busiest ever Saturday and Sunday this weekend, and the Auctions this week seem to have been the best ever. Also flying down the Alexa rankings and hit the 400,000mark today. More news is that we now have two Americans owning countries on Buythemap, to join our international contingent of Kenneth in Finland, oh and our first female owner aswell. Updated the site a little again, now have fancier words when the mouse goes on a country - that took me ages to learn! And there are lots of improvements going on in the background that will be revealed soon. Remember I am learning this as I go. Imagine all those people reading my words, wow I think Im going to cry, what next, maybe I'll lead a revolution.

Finally - whats going on with IRAQ I hear you shout, or did Laura just burp?? Anyway, IRAQ now has an occupier, Russel is currently keeping the peace, although a bit controversial when he asked me to put a Union Jack on it he would like all the other countries to know he has no weapons of mass destruction, but he is a bit trigger happy (you are warned.) Right so I have a big master plan for IRAQ its going to be a competition again, but a democratic one, keep watching and I will reveal soon. 21st February 2006 - Brummies unite!

Hah!! I had to put a very quick entry in - I got a mention in a press release!! (and I didn't write it!) have a look at it here. Made me laugh!! BBC T.V. next....imagine that. 'So Mr French exactly how do you sell a country?? Well Ewan its like this.....' Anyway as you can see another 4 countries all sold at the weekend. Hits are going through the roof, and BuytheMap was in the top 100,000 on Alexa today - for those of you who aren't techies its very good. Still lots to do though as you can imagine, and I have been looking at further marketing and upgrade options. Has to shell out a further £50 yesterday to upgrade the server for all the traffic, but I guess that is a good thing. Quick question that has been troubling me for the last few days.....If your a well off Rich family and you tend to go to Dubai or Africa on your holidays why would you ever go on holiday showdown!?! 19th February 2006 - Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo is not the best movie for Valentines day!

So I've made it to the end of quite a traumatic week, Valentines days always are for blokes. It was going so well until at Tescos (buying the 'Finest' food) I had a choice, Pride & Prejudice or Deuce Bigalow, so you guessed it I went for the latter. Anyway after selling the movie to Laura, 15minutes in and me laughing histerically like a 14 year old boy and Law sat crossed armed, (I think a women with a penis on her head is funny!) I had to save the night with some Sopranos - 7 episodes down now! Anyway the website hows it going? I hear you call. Well as you can see, improved again. New homepage, blog, FAQs, all revamped. The site is proving very popular, now had 35,000 hits and averaging nearly 2000 a day. So I am putting together a stats page / testomonials as we speak/write/blog. And this weeks Auctions.......present ones are just ending, looking good again the 4 new countries are CONGO/GERMANY/PAKISTAN/MEXICO. For people who only join the site now it looked crap before - now it looks like a porsche on speed!

Sunday 12th February 2006 - When the Internet takes over your life!

I remember the weekends, looking forward to them, running free in fields, drinking beer in shady bars, and watching naff movies - sadly I am spending far to much time on this site and seem to be completely missing the whole shabang (dont know where I got that last word from?) Anyway as you can tell its been a busy busy week, and sorry to all the emails I have not got around to answering yet. Actually spent most of saturday with a massive hangover I think its the Magners (cider). Big week coming up as well - Valentines and Laura's Bday .........Oh and also just got Sopranos season 2 so will have to cram some of that in. As for the site well as you can see things seem to be continuing to go well, I've seen a couple of copy cats now which is getting funny and only after 4 weeks as well. But the big news is this weekend I released my first ever Press release. Never done anything like that before but thought it would be fun - click here. And so will see what that produces, I also invested a small amount of money made in some advertising so again just testing out new ideas. As for this weeks Auctions they seemed pretty sensible - but this coming week we have some beauties up for Auction. I think Brazil looks the best. Oh and I have also been looking at improving/changing the map as I think we can make it even better - and tell me what you think. Its only 4weeks old but keep watching, and hey take a punt on a country, may be worth something someday ;) Keeping an eye on my competition - the dreaded Pixel websites many seem quite dull - we are not!

Thurday 9th February 2006 - Week 3 on Buy the map........and we are officially ranked on Alexa!

So this is the mid-week update. I've been trying to keep the updates on my Blog to about 2 a week, quite frankly because Mid week life is a lot duller than weekend life. Firstly the big news is that BuytheMap is now ranked on Alexa.com!! Our average over 3 months is 845,000th most popular website - and we've only been going 3 weeks! Last week we ranked in the top 500,000 which is excellent news - well a start anyway. At the time of my last post we had hit the 10,000 hits milestone, since then we have added a further 25,000 - and if you type in Buythemap on Google there are 500 entries! The auctions have also been proving popular and there have been some fantastic competition entries which have been great fun to get in my inbox. Anyway as you can tell the site has undergone some major changes and there are loads more to come. I am looking at marketing options (as ever there is just never enough time). On the personal side of things- well my mother has now safely left..... phew! - she was in town to help my sister choose her wedding dress for this summer! As for what I have been up to, well quite little, there's a lot coming up soon, Valentines, Laura's Bday, our 2 year anniversary, and my 25th Birthday (well thats next month but I am excited as am planning a pirate party - have already bought a hat and wig off ebay, and I think everyone that knows me is bored about hearing about it.. Just looking forward to the weekend. Keep watching guys, keep telling people about the site and keep bidding. Sunday 5th of February 2006 - Competition created and we go over 10,000 hits!

Well its been a very positive week for BuytheMap - officially going through the 10,000 hits mark and now at over 5000 aleady this month. Some of you may have already seen the star in the front page for our competition - and have had some really fun entries - its great getting home from work and checking the emails so keep them coming! You may have also noticed the site has had a revamp, and I have upgraded the hosting and Software I am using to give it more punch. Starting to get pricey now and I feel like an entrepreneur! So keep watching there should be some more major changes coming up. Anyway as for me this week, it's been a fairly quiet one finished off with a night out in Birminghm to see the show 'Footloose' starring the very famous Cheryl Baker. It was excellent, and there were some great songs including 'I need a hero' So all the women were going crazy. This week also sees the arrival of my mother from Malta - so will be interesting to see how that one goes! Wish me Luck!!

Sunday 29th of January 2006 - 4 Countries Sold!

Well that's it the first week is over and the scores are in...and we have sold all 4! Great news thanks for all the bids guys, but it gets better we got up to £50 for Congo!! Wow. Anyway now we are on to week 2 and a bit of a gold rush is ensuing, 4 new countries are up for sale and I think word is getting out. In fact I have been contacted directly with some very interesting propositions and am currently considering......in fact a bit of news Ben who just won Poland for £10 has already been offered £25 by another bidder (over 100% profit in 1day!) However I also have some very grave news (I'll put text in italic to show the change of mood) - I have a copycat that has completely ripped me off, copied my page, map etc and is claiming he came up with the idea - I can't believe it this guy is going around saying he came up with it first......so I am really mad about that. His site is not as good as mine though - so if anyone runs in to this guy remember Buythemap was here first! Ok I feel a bit better having vented, all in all this week has been awesome - Thursday and Friday I was out on the beers with my good friends, and today I went to the Chinese quarter in B'ham with Laura to celebrate the new year. Tuesday 24 of January 2006  - 'I never expected this!!'

Phew this isn't going quite as expected - it's actually working!! I'm constantly checking in to Ebay now to see what bids are at and whether new people enter the fray. Today India went up to £26 and I just checked in to see that Peru which seemed to have been stuck on 1p is now £10. The site has now received  a few hundred hits and checking out the counters on Ebay Poland has had 200hits - the others around 150. So well quite frankly I am chuffed. I have emailed friends - thanks guys for responses and any messages you may have passed on, some of you may have also seen me in forums trying to get some interest, so thanks all round. As for this week well its still only Tuesday and there is a whole week of bidding still to go - so who knows what we could get to - maybe Mr. and Mrs. HSBC may not be needed quite so much. Anyway I'm getting carried away.  I haven't even been paying that much attention to Celebrity Big Brother which has gone bonkers, poor Laura has been completely forgotten so I'm going to sign off now - need to have a good nights rest as the bags under my eyes are getting massive, and find out what the girly has been up to.

Saturday 21 of January 2006  'First Entry...ever'

So this is it - my first entry on my new website and my first ever blog... blog?? Should really be called diary but anyway that's for another time. So what is this site all about......well like a lot of other people I just watched Alex Tew get rich from the Milliondollarhomepage and thought well if its that easy why don't we all do it. But I thought pixels were boring where's the real fun in that. In fact why not sell advertising space on something a little bit more interesting. And then my mind ran wild.........!

So after a week of buying the domain (I think it makes sense) and spending far to much time trying to find a decent map, we come to this. 

How does it work?? Countries can be bought direct by emailing me a bid, or I also intend to list the countries I am selling on Ebay from time to time. So the market will decide how much a country is worth. I imagine some countries becoming quite valuable, I have images of big multinationals wanting to get their logos on the land, people setting up communities on their sites, others just trying to get in quick on a modern day Gold Rush.

And who am I? - My friends call me Frenchie, I live in Birmingham in the U.K. with my long suffering girlfriend Laura. And why am I doing this what loan or debt do I have to pay off?? Well none really but I would love a flat screen T.V. to go on the wall, and an Xbox360, oh a PSP, surround sound etc etc!!
